hyp0static video
nee
look:
my good friend,
dj hurula, and i were commissioned to put together this
piece. the idea was to give a glimpse into the life of watchamn nee -
a chinese christian who planted underground home churches despite
it being against the law. the 400 churches he planted before being
imprisoned in 1952 have grown to over 2,300. the quote that
opens up the song was found written on a piece of paper under
his pillow after he died in prison in 1972. i wrote the song,
and dj then put the visuals around it.
fire works in the nebraska sky
look:
another of my good friends,
tim hossler, is a graphic designer and 2d artist. he made
this video (and the one below) as part of his application for
his masters program at the cranbrook academy of art. for both
pieces, he took digital video, pulled stills from the video,
and reassembled the stills into a video - like a collage you
see one piece at a time, giving the illusion of motion. for
"fire works..." for the main song, i assembled the names of
different firecrackers into lyrics. i wrote the track around
a loop of a song called "galaxy" by
hippiehaus. it also
features john lee hooker singing "boom boom boom" and "bang
bang bang" on the chorus. hopefully a version of this song
will be on the next hyp0static release. the intro and outro
is part of a song by hank williams.
2000 paris or bridgette bardot was god
look:
tim shot this one on a trip to
paris when he was working for annie leibovitz. he wanted it
to have the kind of mysterious feel of someone being in a
new place for the first time, taking in all of the sights,
sounds, and experiences - a modern "american in paris." i
created the sound design more like a dj-mix, using loops
from various french songs, mixed with the odd american piece
thrown in here and there, peppered with the obligatory
serge gainsbourg. all tied together with a unifying beat.
